Pictures of these dogs dating as far back as 1850 in England serve as a proof of the breed's ancient origins. The American Bulldog is also a rare breed. The breed was used for such blood sports as bull baiting, bear baiting, badger hunting and is believed to be different in temperament and appearance from the dog we know today.
American Bulldogs are true working dogs nowadays. They have been successfully used in a number of activities throughout their long history. They are unsurpassed farm and home guardians. American Bulldogs are generally quiet dogs, outgoing and easily trainable, as a rule. The American Bulldog has a reputation of an aggressive and a stubborn dog breed. However, these dogs are not groundlessly aggressive. Proper training will make them obedient and eager to please. The breed has features similar to their cousins the American Staffordshire Terrier, the Bullmastiff, the English Bulldog and the Boxer. American Bulldogs have an appearance that is notoriously intimidating and imposing.
