American Bulldog Puppy

An American Bulldog puppy is not the best purchase for a novice and unknowledgeable dog owner. This breed requires a strong hand in training and socialization; otherwise it becomes dominating and potentially dangerous for both the owner and strangers. Dogs of this breed are often confused with the American Staffordshire Terrier or the American Pit Bull Terrier, which have different origin and purposes.

This variety of the Bulldog is absolutely different from its cousins, the English and French Bulldogs. The American Bulldog puppy grows into an agile, swift and very strong dog. The American Bulldog is protective, brave and determined, but never hostile to humans. This breed is good with children, if raised together and kept indoors. Being very intelligent and devoted to the owner, these dogs will fight wild animals, criminals and even fire to save the master. American Bulldogs don’t lose their head when fighting. When called off by the owner, they immediately obey.

When purchasing an American Bulldog puppy, ask about its pedigree and registration. This breed is relatively new and rare, that’s why many irresponsible breeders sell low quality puppies and offer a rare breed registry for them. Actually, such registries register any dog, cat or cattle breed that someone wants to make up. Registration with rare breed registries means nothing for real breed fanciers, as it doesn’t reflect the quality of the individual dog.

Seeing both parents of the American Bulldog puppy will give you some idea about the future looks and personality of the dog. Feel free to ask about health problems in the bloodline. There are no absolutely healthy dogs, but it’s possible to prevent a serious disorder, if the owner is warned about the tendency in the line. American Bulldogs are generally hardy, but they are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, like all large and massive breeds.

Devoted breeders who care for the well-being of their dogs and for the improvement of the breed in general will sell their puppies only to suitable owners. Unknowledgeable buyers who cannot train and socialize their dogs create the wrong image of the breed in public. Only a happy American Bulldog puppy will grow into a trustworthy and friendly family pet. These active dogs need much daily exercise and attention. In a small apartment or in the yard, an American Bulldog puppy will soon become bored and aggressive.
